This past weekend was our very first, annual "Costumes for a Cause"! Despite the cold, rainy weather we had a great turnout. The fire department showed up right at 3:30 with the engine and stayed until 5:30 when we wrapped up. We photographed 24 children in their cute (and some scary!) costumes and collected 220 pounds of food! We cant wait for the SECOND annual "Costumes for a Cause"!

Last night I had the privalige of going to see Luke Bryan in Concert at the NCW Fair. If you have the opportunity to see him live I highly recommend you do :-) It was wonderful!Besides the great music, animals and food I also got to spend some time with my parents and my husband. Was a very good evening. :-)

2/365 AND 3/365
Well that didnt take me very long! Sheesh! While I did not post yesteday I DID take a few pictures ;-)
#2 is hardly anything to be proud of technically speaking, but it was fun to play with my step-daughter and just be goofy. Especially since the next day, today, we traded our little girl for a big girl. She is officially registered for Kindergarten and starts in only 2 short weeks! She and I went today and bought all her school supplies, including the TWENTY glue sticks on her list. Which brings me to picture #3...

Trying to Stay Motivated.....1/365
In an effort to keep my blog consistently updated I am going to make yet another attempt at a 365 Project. A 365 Project means picking up my camera and shooting something, every day for a year.. So even if I dont have a session scheduled for a particular day I will still post something I shot that day :-)
Today is our puppy, Maggie, hanging out in one of her favorite spots under the kitchen table. We adopted her from the shelter about 10 months ago.

Blessings
I've recently had the privilage of working with a family who is trying to adopt. It has been so rewarding to help them during this life changing processes. I myself am adopted, so this project has been very close to my heart. While helping this family a good friend suggested I do "Adoption Photography" Well, with the help of the adoptive family I'm working with, we have started to come up with a program for families trying to adopt. My goal with this program was to make at least one part of their adoption process less stressfull. Be sure to check back often to see what will be offered!

Tsunami??
OK.....maybe not a tsunami, but sure seemed like it! Wednesday evening I made the trip over to Seattle to pick up my cousin from the airport and I could not believe how hard it was raining on I-90! I left early in hopes of taking my time and playing with my camera along the way. Apparently it was not meant to be, because it was raining WAY too hard. I did however stop in to North Bend, at the outlet mall (more specifically, COACH Outlet ;-) At any rate, it was quite the adventurous day and I did manage to get a couple shots in once I got to Federal Way. I was also able to take my dog, Sadie along for the mini-roadtrip. She is normally camera shy, but must have realized I was bored and desperate for something/someone to photograph and sat very still for me while I played with my camera. :-)

Small Business Fair
My good friend Dawn is hosting a Small Business Fair at her home this coming Monday. She has invited several of our community's small businesses to all come together in one location so that past/present/future clients can easily learn about these businesses without the pressure of buying. Katie Clark Photography is among those businesses being represented. If you have questions or need directions please call Dawn at 888-5355

Let Me Introduce You...
to Katie Clark Photography's first ever Senior Representative! Alyssa is not only our first 2011 model, but our first ever in the program. Alyssa, as well as the other models, start their terms during their Junior year of high school. First a "creative session" is done. These images are used by Katie for marketing and also to create "rep cards" for the models to pass out to their friends and family. For each of their cards, that is returned to me with a scheduled session, they receive a $20 credit toward their own Senior Session.
Since this is the first year trying the program, it is a learning experience. So far, I've learned that I should have got an earlier start with my reps! That being the case, I would like to start receiving applications for 2012 Seniors so that I may get an earlier start and allow them their entire Junior year to represent Katie Clark Photography. Reps should be outgoing, active in their school (this can be sports and/or clubs) and have a positive attitude. If you are interested, or know a good candidate, please contact me.

Long Time Comin'... :-)
I've been saving for a long time now...and finally was able to afford my new camera! I cannot wait for my first session with it! The weather has been terrible since I got it, so I havent really had the opportunity to play with it much. But here are a few shots I quickly snapped the day it came. :-)

My Confusing Family that I love :-)
So long story short, I'm adopted. And between adopted, biological and step...I have 8 siblings. Then you throw in adopted and bioligical parents as well as all the other adopted and biological relatives (cousins, grandparents...you name it, I got it :-) Anyways, it can get confusing when trying to explain to people (especially people that I grew up with and have only ever known me with my adopted family members). Hmmm....I rambled. Sorry! :-) My point IS, is that I am very excited that earlier this week I was able to spend some time with a couple of my newer family members. Was so much fun and am honored to have been able to photograph what will soon be the newest member of the family. ;-)

Sailboat Race
Friday my dad and I left home for Olympia with plans to race his sailboat. Yesterday we got up fairly early, ate a good breakfast and headed for the marina! Now, this was his first race this season, and my first race in a few years. While things weren't always going as planned (i.e. sails/lines getting hung up) we had a good time and looked at it as a learning experience for next time. The one thing that was on our side (according to Dad anyways) was that we had good winds. In MY opinion, I would rather have light winds and no heeling over, which means I have an opportunity to get my camera out instead of bracing myself so as not to feel like I'm going over board. ;-) The handful of pictures I took were in the 10-15 minutes after we were done, had the sails down and were motoring back into the marina.

Wardrobe Tips
When you are preparing for your session and wondering what to wear keep these tips in mind:
-Simplicity is KEY! Solid colors are best. Avoid large or bold patterns and bright colors (they draw attention away from the face).
-Long sleeve dresses and shirts are recommended.
-Darker clothing tends to minimize body size and light tones tend to emphasize body size.
-Do not mix light and dark colors. Save stronger colors and patterns for accent items like scarves and neckties.
-White or light pastel clothing looks best in portraits taken against white or light backgrounds. Dark clothing looks best photographed against darker backgrounds and creates a more formal mood.
-Earth tones are best for outdoor portraits.
-Traditional style clothing will keep your portraits looking fresh for years.

Pre-Session Tips
Good Morning!
So in my next few blogs I want to focus on tips to prepare you for your upcoming sessions, whether they are scheduled with me or not. This first one is geared more towards "Senior Sessions." Figured that would be a good starting point since, at least around here, we're getting close to "Senior Season" for 2011 Seniors. And don't hesitate to leave a question in the comment section or contact me some other way if you need more information. :-) So sit back, grab your coffee, and let the info sink in! ;-)
#1 - Remember anything you might need during your session (brush, hairspray, lip gloss, etc)
#2 - Be careful of sun exposure prior to the session. I cannot edit out tan lines and sun burns do not photograph well
#3 - Bring several changes of clothes, preferably different STYLES like casual, dressy, personal (cheer uniform, team jersey, etc)
#4 - Bring props that show your personality
IDEAS:
* Musical Instruments
* School Jacket
* Class Ring
* Hats
* Uniforms (athletic, band, FFA, etc)
* Sports Equipment
* Sunglasses
#5 - Wear your hair as you do normally. Guys should NOT have a fresh haircut. If you need a trim, schedule for at least a week before your portraits.
The next blog will focus on "Wardrobe Tips" that will be pretty general for any session. See you then!

Tutu Much Fun!
So I recently purchased this super cute pink tutu to use in little girl portraits. I immediately tried it out on my little niece :-)

I then realized "Hey! I could make these!" And so I did! Myself, my good friend Amy (also a photographer) and my sister Sara spent a good amount of time making tutus of different colors and sizes. :-) Here is my step-daughter in her large pink tutu (we also now have blue and purple ;-)

Phew...
OK, well at least it hasnt been quite as long between the last couple posts. ;-)
Typically, for any photographer, the months of January through March are extremely slow. Thankfully things have not slowed down a whole lot for me this year (considering I have 6 sessions in the next 2 weeks!). I am so grateful to my loyal clients. I owe it all to you :-) Thank you!

Oh My Word...
I cannot believe it was the end of October when I last updated this! Needless to say, things have been really busy around here as I'm sure with you as well. Photography is my second job (as much as I would like it to be my first ;-) and so between photography and my other job I think I was working at least 60 hours a week over the holidays. I had many many fun sessions and look forward to many more in 2010 :-)
